I recently rewatched Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and I really loved it, so I thought it would be cool to write down my opinions about it in a post.
ZNMD touched and fascinated me - I thought that this was a really uplifting, positive movie that raises many thought-provoking questions about how to live your life and teaches you to embrace it.
What ZNMD is About
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) follows the story of three conflicted bachelors, Kabir (Abhay Deol), Imran (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), who go on a vacation in Spain before Kabir’s marriage. However, the trip throws many unexpected surprises at them - Arjun meets a free-spirited diving instructor named Laila (Katrina Kaif 😍), Kabir starts to question his engagement and Imran fights with a secret that he has kept from them all.
As the trip goes on, it turns into a heartfelt journey of self-discovery as these three internally conflicted bachelors confront their fears and embrace life.
Why I Love ZNMD
I love ZNMD, and I would definitely rate it a 5/5. 😍
It is definitely one of my all-time favourite Bollywood movies: the acting is great; the music is uplifting and unique; Imran’s poetry is thought-provoking and meaningful and the message of the movie is powerful.
The Characters
I absolutely love all the main characters in ZNMD. I think each of them, especially the bachelors, are extremely compelling, complex and conflicted.
All the characters are so different from one another, and there’s so much to learn from them, especially Laila.
On the outside, they seem so simple but inside, there is so much going on. The secrets and backstory of the characters make them not only engaging and relatable, but also enrich their personalities and bring meaning to them.
The Story
Of course, the story.
It is so compelling and beautiful. I think that it is very well thought-out and structured. There are so many unexpected surprises, and many twists and turns woven into the story.
I love the idea of each of the bachelors choosing one activity where each of them confronted their fears - scuba diving, skydiving and running with the bulls. I think that all the elements of the plot piece together perfectly, like a jigsaw, with everything having a purpose and making complete sense.
The Scenery
Of course, the scenery. We have to talk about the scenery!
I love that they chose Spain as a location - the road trip is so beautiful and scenic, and the breath-taking scuba diving and skydiving scenes are out of this world. Everything feels like something coming out of a dream, and the road trip especially became particularly iconic.
Additionally, Spain’s beauty and sense of freedom works really well with the theme of the story, and I think that there couldn’t have been a better setting for the movie.
The Music
Oh, and the music!
The music perfectly complements the story. Each song has its own different vibe that matches the mood of the scene that it is part of.
The music is so uplifting, unique and some of the songs are really thoughtful.
The Poetry
The poetry. Oh my god the poetry.
The gorgeous poems were written by Javed Akhtar, and recited by Imran in the movie.
I love the poems. They are so fascinating, compelling and thought-provoking, and are so deep and meaningful. They enrich the story and bring it to life with its deep philosophical concepts and ideas.
The Message
And finally, the message.
The message of ZNMD is powerful and deep.
ZNMD teaches us all many things, but the most important lesson is to live our lives to the fullest. We learn to confront our fears, let ourselves go and be free. 🕊️
