Joey and Phoebe's Relationship
I’ve been watching Friends for the second time, and I’ve always thought that Joey and Phoebe would be an amazing couple. The dynamic between them creates effortless chemistry in their scenes. Whilst their platonic relationship is so sweet and heartfelt, I’ve always felt that they have potential for more. In this article, I’ll explore their relationship as friends and a potential romantic relationship. 💕
Joey and Phoebe - A Friendship
Joey and Phoebe shared quite a few scenes on the show, and they were all packed with comedy, fun, a lot of imagination and pure cuteness 🥰, and their dynamic created instant chemistry. Joey’s innocence and carefree nature complements Phoebe’s quirkiness and creativity. They both understand each other so well, and love each other unconditionally. In my opinion, they were one of the best boy-girl platonic relationships in the group.
Key Events in Their Relationship:
Phoebe gets upset when Joey blows off dinner with her to go on a date. However, a few days later, Phoebe does the same to meet David. When David leaves to go back to Minsk, Phoebe is left heartbroken and Joey comforts her, their anger and frustration for each other disappearing and showing how much they truly care about one another.
Joey falls in love with Ursula which upsets Phoebe and makes her feel neglected. However, Ursula is not Joey’s type - she is rude and selfish. At Central Perk, Phoebe dresses up as Ursula and impersonates her breaking up with him. Joey finds out that it is Phoebe, and realises the extent of her loyalty and their friendship. Joey moves away from Ursula, and they remain friends.
Joey is (one of 😂) Phoebe’s backups if either one of them don’t get married by the time they’re 40. When Rachel, Ross and Joey realise that she has two backups, Rachel strikes up a deal. She writes down Joey’s name and Ross’s name on two pieces of paper, and asks Phoebe to choose one. The person whose name she picks will be her backup, and the other person Rachel’s. When Phoebe picks Ross and Rachel picks Joey, they immediately decide to switch. This moment, although very short-lived, showcases just how much Phoebe loves Joey.
When he thought that Phoebe was pregnant, he proposed to her because he didn’t want her to raise her child alone - and Phoebe said yes!! This moment is not only funny as Phoebe wasn’t pregnant, but it was also really meaningful. Even though Joey also proposed to Rachel later on in the same episode, this moment still shows just how much they love each other.
When they are left the only single ones in the group, they often came up with adorable and imaginative theories.
Joey: “You think you and I should hook up?”
Phoebe: “Oh yeah, we will.”
This is when Phoebe explains her theory, and how they will both end up together at the end. This scene is not only funny, but also showcases the closeness and understanding between them.

I think that Joey and Phoebe definitely had potential for a romance. With their funny but meaningful friendship, I honestly think that a potential romance would’ve also been a hit with the fans!
They understand each other in a way that no one else in the group does. The way that they empathise with each other is the main reason that I think they would have been an amazing couple (much better than Ross and Rachel).
All the friends in the group can understand each other, but the level of empathy that Joey and Phoebe share is unmatchable.
Joey embraces Phoebe’s quirkiness and Phoebe believes in Joey and listens to him when nobody else does. Phoebe and Joey always cared about each other and accepted each other for their true selves, something that is not only important in a friendship, but in a romantic relationship. Additionally, the scenes that they shared had strong chemistry. This instant, effortless chemistry between them would have been the cherry on top of the cake for their potential romance. ❤
