Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood are two of the most iconic female characters in Harry Potter, and also two of the most contrasting characters. Hermione’s logical and analytical thinking and Luna’s creativity and open-mindedness set them apart, but their fierce loyalty and passion for knowledge bring them together. I thought that it would be really interesting to write and article comparing their differences and similarities, as well as how their friendship started out - so here it is!
Hermione and Luna’s Differences and Similarities
Differences
Hermione Granger is a Virgo: she is known for her practical, logical and analytical thinking, as well as her organisation for planning ahead and her quick thinking. She is iconic for being one of the most intelligent and determined strong female characters in literature.
Hermione is exceptionally intelligent - she is not only book-smart but also street-smart, and has shown resourcefulness in times of high-stakes danger. She is hardworking, determined and driven, pursuing her desires with utmost sincerity. Hermione is also known for her strong morals, and is known for fighting against injustice (for example, her S.P.E.W. campaign).
However, Luna Lovegood is nearly the complete opposite of her. As an Aquarius, Luna is quirky, creative and honest. Whilst Hermione sticks to the facts, Luna is willing to go beyond. She has a unique, unconventional way of thinking and has a fresh perspective of interpreting the world, making her a fascinating character. She accepts herself the way that she is, unbothered by what others say about her - Luna couldn’t care less what people think, and moves through life in her own little world. She is honest and direct, saying what she thinks without worrying.
Whilst Luna’s intelligence may not be as obvious as Hermione’s, she is passionate about learning and is also emotionally intelligent and can understand different situations and people. One of the things that defines Luna is her individuality - she is not afraid to be herself and encourages everybody to embrace their true selves.
Similarities
Whilst Hermione and Luna could not be more different, they also have many similarities that allow them to bond.
They are both fiercely and unwaveringly loyal to those that they love, and are willing to go the distance for them. They are also very brave and courageous in times of danger, both active members of Dumbledore’s Army and consistent heroines in the story.
Moreover, they are both known for their kindness, empathy and compassion. Hermione gives without expecting back, and Luna empathises with those around her, even if they misunderstand her.
They are both extremely intelligent, but in different ways. Hermione is logical, but Luna is creative. However, despite these differences, they are both fuelled by their passion for knowledge and learning, and are both smart and bright in their own ways.
Comparison

JK Rowling’s Perspective
Rowling called Luna her ‘anti-Hermione’ because of their differences.
Why did Hermione dismiss Luna at first?
When Luna Lovegood was introduced in The Order of the Phoenix, Hermione disapproved of her at first. This was probably because of their contrasting opinions and ways of thinking. Hermione judged Luna when she first came across her, and even criticised the Quibbler. She thought that Luna’s eccentric views were invalid and not justified by facts, and didn’t listen to her. She often talked over her, mocked Luna’s beliefs and lacked empathy in trying to understand her. Instead of opening up her mind and trying to learn from her, she dismissed her at first.
However, as Hermione got to know Luna, she learnt to open her mind up a bit more when she saw what Luna was really like.
How did their friendship start?
They both bonded over Dumbledore’s Army, and Hermione admired Luna’s dedication, skills and focus. Later on in the Department of Mysteries, Luna remained calm and composed under pressure, and looked out for her friends, demonstrating loyalty and kindness, as well as courage in the way she fought. Luna’s behaviour in the Department of Mysteries earned Hermione’s respect, and that was how their friendship started out.
